Why Middlebury?

Small college.Big mountain habit.

Middlebury pairs a residential liberal arts college with a ski area it has run for ninety years. The trade is scale: no city, no graduate students, and a campus where most of a racer's life happens within a few miles.

About the school

The honest version.

What the school is, what it is known for, and what a family should weigh before committing.

Middlebury is a private liberal arts college of nearly 2,800 undergraduates in Middlebury, Vermont, a small town in the Champlain Valley between the Green Mountains and the Adirondacks. It is best known for languages, international studies, environmental studies and writing, with 46 majors, a 9:1 student-faculty ratio and a February-entry cohort that starts mid-year. Life is campus-centered; Burlington is about an hour north and there is no city nearby. For a racer, the draw is that the college owns its ski area. The Middlebury Snow Bowl sits on Route 125 in Hancock, a few minutes past the Bread Loaf campus that is itself about 11 miles east of town, with 1,020 feet of vertical, 28 trails and race history back to 1934; it hosted the 2013 NCAA Championships and the 2026 EISA Championships. Middlebury is a NESCAC Division III school, but skiing races in the EISA against the Division I programs and at the NCAA Championships, where the Panthers have appeared every year since 1967. There are no athletic scholarships, but full need is met.

Know before you commit

  • Division III means no athletic scholarships; NESCAC policy states that by NCAA Division III rules none are awarded, so aid is need-based only against a $94,386 comprehensive fee.(middlebury.edu)
  • Selective and remote: an 18% acceptance rate (Class of 2030), and the college sits in a small rural Vermont town with no city nearby.(middlebury.edu)
  • The comprehensive fee rose 4.0% to $94,386 for 2026-27, among the highest sticker prices in college skiing.(middlebury.edu)
