THE IVY LEAGUE. THE UPPER VALLEY.

Dartmouth College

Dartmouth is the smallest Ivy, a college of about 4,700 undergraduates on a walkable 269-acre campus in Hanover, New Hampshire. It founded the first collegiate ski team in 1909 and owns its home hill, the Dartmouth Skiway, fifteen miles up the road in Lyme. The team races the EISA carnival circuit and the NCAA Championships while students move through four 10-week terms on the D-Plan.

Why Dartmouth?

An outdoor life.An intellectual one, too.

Dartmouth's scale and setting concentrate college life around the Green, while skiing and the Outing Club reach into the Upper Valley. Both halves shape a racer's four years here.

About the school

The honest version.

What the school is, what it is known for, and what a family should weigh before committing.

Dartmouth is the smallest Ivy, a private college of about 4,700 undergraduates in Hanover, New Hampshire, a small town on the Connecticut River roughly two hours from Boston. It is a liberal arts college with a research university attached, strong in economics, government, engineering and the sciences, and it runs on a quarter-based D-Plan that lets students shuffle terms on and off campus. Life revolves around the Green, the Dartmouth Outing Club and a large Greek scene; winter is embraced rather than endured. For a ski racer this is the deepest tradition in American college skiing. The college founded the first collegiate ski team in 1909, has had someone at every Winter Olympics since 1924, and owns its own mountain: the Dartmouth Skiway in Lyme, 14 miles and about 20 minutes from campus, with 31 trails and 968 feet of vertical. The team races in the EISA and at the NCAA Championships, which it hosted in 2025. Admission is the hard part: 6 percent, and aid is need-based only.

Know before you commit

  • Extremely selective: a 5.8% acceptance rate for the Class of 2030, and standardized testing is required again.(admissions.dartmouth.edu)
  • No athletic scholarships: as an Ivy, all Dartmouth aid is need-based, so a racer's package depends entirely on family finances against a $98,427 sticker price.(admissions.dartmouth.edu)
  • The first-year winter is a required residence term, so a racer carries a full 10-week course load through the carnival season with no option to take that term off.(admissions.dartmouth.edu)

Ski team experience

Big Green.Serious alpine racing.

Dartmouth skiing is one team across four disciplines, each with its own head coach: men's and women's alpine train at the Skiway, nordic at Oak Hill. The program races the EISA carnival circuit from mid-January through February and the NCAA Championships in March, and it provides competitive opportunities for up to 55 skiers a season.

Academics

What you can study.

Dartmouth runs on four 10-week quarters and students do not declare a major until sophomore year. Fall, winter and spring of the first year are required residence terms, so the winter race season overlaps a full academic term; later years allow leave terms that can be placed around training blocks.
