Why CMC?
Keep racing FIS.Decide the degree later.
CMC is built for racers who want RMISA starts and a low tuition bill while they finish an associate or bachelor's degree, or position themselves to transfer.

RMISA starts without Division I admission
As RMISA's alpine associate member, CMC racers start in the same carnivals as Colorado, Denver, Utah and Nevada; the team's Lucas Ellis won the RMISA Nevada Invitational slalom in February 2026.(skiracing.com)

A historic hill next to campus
Howelsen Hill, owned and operated by the City of Steamboat Springs, is Colorado's oldest continuously operated ski area (since 1915) and has been the training ground for 100 Olympians.(steamboatsprings.net)

Two paths through the program
Athletes can ski four years while finishing a bachelor's degree, or two years with an associate degree and transfer to a four-year team.(cmceagles.com)

Tuition by the credit
In-state tuition is $220 per credit and WUE is $330, with an estimated in-state on-campus year of $22,804.(coloradomtn.edu)
About the school
The honest version.
What the school is, what it is known for, and what a family should weigh before committing.
Colorado Mountain College is a public, open-enrollment college with 11 locations across Colorado's central mountains; Steamboat Springs is one of its three residential campuses, and the college has about 5,000 full-time students in all. It grants certificates, associate degrees and nine bachelor's degrees (business, nursing, sustainability, ecosystem science, education and others), plus a ski and snowboard business program that fits the town. Admission is automatic with a diploma or GED. The ski team, the Eagles, is roughly 40 years old and trains at Howelsen Hill, a lit slalom hill within walking distance of campus, and at Steamboat Resort three miles away. CMC is an associate member of RMISA, so its racers start alongside Colorado, Denver and Utah, but the college is not an NCAA member and its skiers do not go to the NCAA Championships. Many treat it as a two-year springboard to a Division I team. Tuition is per credit and low, but since 2025 the college no longer funds the team; it runs on donations and a $10,000 annual athlete contribution.
Know before you commit
- No NCAA pathway: CMC is not an NCAA member and holds only associate membership in RMISA, so its skiers race RMISA carnivals but cannot qualify for the NCAA Skiing Championships; racers who want that must transfer.(rmisaskiing.com)
- Funding is now on the families: the college says it "does not have the funding structure to independently sustain the costs of the ski team," so from 2026-27 each athlete pays $10,000 per year and the program depends on a donor campaign ($1.5 million goal by June 2027) after state and federal cuts ended institutional funding in 2025.(coloradomtn.edu)
- Limited academic breadth: nine bachelor's degrees and no engineering or research-university options, so students wanting other majors plan on transferring after the associate degree.(coloradomtn.edu)
- The program's future was in doubt as recently as spring 2025, when the coach learned it might be cut; the April 2026 campaign update still described a $1 million fundraising deadline.(skiracing.com)

Ski team experience
Skigles.RMISA's associate member.
CMC's coed alpine team races slalom and giant slalom in RMISA carnivals as the conference's associate alpine member; the college is not an NCAA member, so its skiers do not go to the NCAA Championships. Head coach Scott Tanner, a former U.S. Ski Team National University Team head FIS coach, has run the program since 2018. Athletes are expected to be active FIS competitors, and the 2025-26 roster page lists 24 athletes.

Questions for the coach
No published training week for this program, so these are the questions to ask.
- No NCAA pathwayIf the NCAA Championships are the goal, ask which former CMC racers transferred to NCAA programs, when, and what points they had when they left.
- Team costsEach athlete pays $10,000 per year toward team costs from 2026-27; ask what that covers, what travel and lift access add, and what happens if the donor campaign falls short.
- Transfer planningAsk an adviser which associate-degree courses transfer cleanly to the four-year schools you are considering, and which do not.
- Training around classThe team page describes morning, afternoon and occasional evening sessions depending on snow; ask how that works with a full course load in January.

Academics
What you can study.
CMC is a dual-mission college on a semester calendar: certificates, 55 associate emphasis areas and nine bachelor's degrees. Admission is open, with placement decided by ACT, SAT or Accuplacer scores rather than acceptance. The bachelor's list is short, so racers wanting engineering or a research-university major usually plan on transferring after the associate degree.

Admissions
Your path here.
Anyone with a high school diploma or GED is admitted; ACT, SAT or Accuplacer scores are used only for class placement. Getting into the college is not the same as making the ski team, which expects active FIS racers and selects its own roster.

- Apply online; the application is free and most people finish it in about 20 minutes.
- Have your high school send an official transcript if you graduated within the last five years.
- Submit ACT or SAT scores or take the Accuplacer placement test, used for class placement only.
- Contact the Steamboat campus for advising, complete financial aid steps and register (fall 2026 registration ran May 4 to August 9).
