About the school

The honest version.

What the school is, what it is known for, and what a family should weigh before committing.

Westminster University is a small private university (868 undergraduates, 8-to-1 student-faculty ratio) on a 27-acre campus in Salt Lake City's Sugar House neighborhood, at the base of the Wasatch. Nursing is the largest major; business, education and the sciences are the other anchors. It is test-optional, charges no application fee, admits about 65 percent of applicants, and posts the highest four-year graduation rate in Utah. Sticker price is high, $46,826 in tuition and fees for 2026-27, but every first-year student receives a grant or scholarship and merit awards run $15,000 to $32,000. For skiers the location is the point: six resorts sit within 30 minutes of campus, Westminster has long been U.S. Ski & Snowboard's partner college, and its alpine team raced in RMISA, with a fourth-place NCAA giant slalom finish in March 2026. The catch is the program's future. Enrollment has fallen, the school posted a $12.5 million loss, and as of September 2026 alpine skiing no longer appears among the 13 NCAA sports on its athletics site, with no 2026-27 roster posted.

Know before you commit

  • Financial and enrollment stress: a June 2026 Forbes analysis gave Westminster a D financial grade, and the Salt Lake Tribune reported a $12.5 million negative net income; trustees publicly disputed the analysis and said the school is stable. The incoming president's stated first task is reversing declining enrollment.(sltrib.com)
  • Ski program uncertainty: alpine skiing is missing from the 13 NCAA sports on the university's athletics page and from the athletics website's sports menu as of September 2026, no 2026-27 roster is posted, and the 2025-26 women's roster had only three skiers. Confirm the program's status directly with the athletics department before committing.(westminsteru.edu)
  • Sticker cost: $68,862 estimated on-campus cost for 2026-27 before aid.(westminsteru.edu)
