Why Vermont?
A real city.A real program.
UVM is the mid-sized option in the East: a research university with eight colleges, a walkable downtown a few blocks from campus and a ski team that races for national titles. The venue is not on campus, so the drive to Stowe is part of the deal.

The winningest program in the East
Vermont has six NCAA team championships (1980, 1989, 1990, 1992, 1994, 2012), 73 individual national champions and 415 All-American citations.(uvmathletics.com)

Stowe as a home hill
UVM hosts the alpine portion of its carnival on Mount Mansfield Ski Club's Main Street at Stowe and will host the 2027 NCAA Championships there, its eighth time as host.(uvmathletics.com)

About the school
The honest version.
What the school is, what it is known for, and what a family should weigh before committing.
The University of Vermont is a public research university with R1 status and roughly 11,600 undergraduates in Burlington, the state's largest city, set on a hill between Lake Champlain and the Green Mountains. It has eight colleges and schools; the strengths families notice are environmental and natural resource programs, nursing and health sciences tied to the medical center, engineering, business and a large arts and sciences college. It is mid-sized, and most undergraduates come from out of state. Burlington is a lively college town with a walkable downtown, which is part of why people choose it. For a ski racer, UVM is one of the strongest programs in the East: six NCAA team titles, 39 EISA championships and 73 individual national champions. The alpine team's home venue is Stowe Mountain Resort, where UVM hosts its carnival on Mount Mansfield Ski Club's Main Street and will host the 2027 NCAA Championships. It is Division I in the EISA, so athletic aid is possible. The catches are an out-of-state sticker over $66,000 and recent budget tightening as enrollment falls.
Know before you commit
- Out-of-state cost is high for a public: $68,878 total cost of attendance in 2026-27, with no full-need guarantee.(uvm.edu)
- Enrollment and budget pressure: UVM projected a $12 million deficit for FY2027 on a roughly 15% drop in first-year enrollment and 7% drop in undergraduates, closed through position eliminations and departmental cuts (August 2026).(vtdigger.org)
- No hill on campus: alpine training and the home carnival are at Stowe, and the university does not publish a drive time from Burlington.(uvmathletics.com)

Questions for the coach
No published training week for this program, so these are the questions to ask.
- Spring semesterSpring classes begin January 19 in 2027, right as carnivals start; ask the coach how missed Thursday and Friday classes are handled with faculty.
- Stowe logisticsThe venue is off campus; ask how the team travels to Stowe, how often it trains there in a week and whether a car is expected.
- AidUVM is Division I, so athletic aid is possible; ask the coach how alpine scholarship money is divided and whether it stacks with merit awards.
- Budget climateUVM closed a projected deficit in 2026 with position cuts; ask which programs or services in your college were affected.

What you can study.
UVM runs two semesters plus a short winter session. In 2026-27 the fall term runs August 31 to December 18 and spring classes begin January 19, so the EISA carnival season and the NCAA Championships fall inside the spring semester; the catalogue notes a policy on class attendance and participation in intercollegiate athletics.

How selective it is.

- Not admitted
UVM admits most applicants and reviews files without regard to family finances, but selective colleges such as nursing, business and engineering carry higher program fees and their own expectations. A coach's support helps a borderline file; it does not replace the academic review.
