A LAND-GRANT FLAGSHIP. TAHOE UNDER AN HOUR AWAY.
University of Nevada, Reno
The University of Nevada, Reno is a public land-grant research university with about 20,200 undergraduates on a 290-acre campus just north of downtown Reno. Skiing here was dropped in 2010 and came back in 2022-23 when the university absorbed Sierra Nevada University; the alpine-only Wolf Pack trains at Mt. Why Nevada?
Division I racing.A program still being built.
Nevada offers a large research university and Mountain West-scale campus life with a small, alpine-only team that has climbed quickly since its 2022 relaunch.

Top-15 finishes two years running

About the school
The honest version.
What the school is, what it is known for, and what a family should weigh before committing.
The University of Nevada, Reno is a public land-grant research university with about 20,400 undergraduates on a 290-acre campus just north of downtown Reno, with Lake Tahoe under an hour away. Engineering, business, journalism (the Reynolds School), nursing and the sciences are the recognized strengths, and the Honors College has grown from 440 students in 2019 to 1,250. Admission requires a 3.0 weighted GPA in core courses; tests are not required, and the middle half of freshmen who submitted SAT scores had 1060 to 1280. Campus life is big-school: 17 Division I teams in the Mountain West and 250-plus clubs. The skiing story is unusual. Nevada raced from 1936 to 2010, then dropped the sport; it came back in 2022-23 when the university absorbed Sierra Nevada University and its coaches. The alpine-only team, about 8 to 10 per gender, trains at Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe, roughly 25 miles up Highway 431, and at Sky Tavern, competes in RMISA at the Division I level, and offers athletic scholarships. Five Wolf Pack skiers qualified for the 2026 NCAA Championships.
Know before you commit
- The program is young: skiing was cut in 2010 and only relaunched in 2022-23, so there is no long modern track record, the roster is small (8-10 per gender) and alpine-only, and the team has not yet placed near the top of RMISA.(nevadawolfpack.com)
- Out-of-state cost: the 2026-27 nonresident on-campus cost of attendance is $51,478, versus $31,290 for Nevada residents; WUE tuition ($14,074) helps only for eligible Western-state students.(unr.edu)
- Conference results are still mid-pack: in 2025-26 the team finished between 5th and 8th in every RMISA carnival, including 7th and 8th at the RMISA Championships at Bridger Bowl.(nevadawolfpack.com)

Nevada skied from 1936 to 2010, then reinstated the sport for 2022-23 as part of absorbing Sierra Nevada University. The program is alpine only, slalom and giant slalom, and competes in RMISA against Colorado, Denver, Utah, Montana State and the two Alaska schools. Head coach Cameron Smith, extended through 2029 in August 2026, leads a 2026-27 roster of 8 men and 7 women from six countries and five U.S. states.

Questions for the coach
No published training week for this program, so these are the questions to ask.
- Scholarship realityWith 6.3 men's and 7.0 women's equivalency scholarships across a 15-skier roster, ask what share of tuition an athletic award would actually cover in year one.
- Residency and WUENonresident cost of attendance is $51,478 versus $31,290 resident; ask whether you qualify for WUE tuition ($14,074) and whether athletic aid stacks with it.
- Training commuteMt. Rose is 25 miles from downtown Reno; ask how many mornings a week the team drives up, and how training days line up with class blocks.
- Test scores for scholarshipsTests are optional for admission but required for most first-year merit scholarships; decide early whether to submit an SAT or ACT.

Academics
What you can study.
Nevada runs a semester calendar, so the January-to-March RMISA season falls inside spring semester and the NCAA Championships land in mid-March. Admission requires a 3.0 weighted GPA in core courses; tests are optional for admission but required for most first-year scholarships. The Honors College has grown to 1,250 students and engineering offers thirteen disciplines, both worth asking about when you plan a race-season course load.
