DIVISION III. THE LAKE SUNAPEE REGION.

Colby-Sawyer College

Colby-Sawyer is a private college of about 760 matriculated undergraduates on 200 acres in New London, New Hampshire, 90 minutes north of Boston. The Chargers race the EISA carnival circuit against Division I programs while the college itself competes in NCAA Division III, and the home hill, Mount Sunapee, is a 15-minute drive from campus with a free student season pass. The 2023 tuition reset put published tuition at $19,000 for 2026-27, so the total billed cost is under $39,000 before aid.

Why Colby-Sawyer?

Small college,big-circuit racing.

Colby-Sawyer is one of the few Division III colleges racing the EISA carnival circuit, and its setting in the Lake Sunapee region keeps training close to class.

About the school

The honest version.

What the school is, what it is known for, and what a family should weigh before committing.

Colby-Sawyer is a very small private college of roughly 760 undergraduates in New London, New Hampshire, a hill town in the Lake Sunapee region about 90 minutes from Boston. Founded in 1837, it has reorganized around professional programs, above all nursing through a long partnership with Dartmouth Health, plus business, exercise science, environmental science and psychology; every student completes an internship and earns a professional minor. In 2023 the college cut its published tuition by 62% to $17,500 (now $18,500), so the total billed cost is about $37,600 before any aid, and everyone is considered for scholarships. For a racer the appeal is proximity: Mount Sunapee is a 15-minute drive, students get a free season pass, and the Chargers race the EISA carnival circuit against the Division I schools even though the college is NCAA Division III (GNAC) with no athletic scholarships. The trade-offs are scale: under 1,000 students, 19 majors, an undergraduate enrollment that halved over a decade, and a small ski team whose racers typically finish toward the back of EISA fields.

Know before you commit

  • Tiny and shrinking: a little over 700 undergraduates on campus in 2024, half the figure of a decade earlier; the 2023 tuition reset was explicitly a bid to reverse that, and the college itself has described the regional demographic decline as a lasting challenge.(vnews.com)
  • Division III with no athletic scholarships, a short list of 19 majors after earlier program cuts, and a small alpine squad: at the 2026 NCAA East Regional slalom its two men's entrants finished 36th and 48th.(colby-sawyerathletics.com)
  • At the January 2026 St. Lawrence Carnival at Whiteface, none of the four women's entrants qualified for a second run in either giant slalom or slalom.(colby-sawyerathletics.com)
  • Retention and completion are modest: the college reports a 68% first-year retention rate for the 2020 cohort and a 57% four-year graduation rate for the entering class of 2017.(colby-sawyer.edu)

Ski team experience

The Chargerson the carnival circuit.

Colby-Sawyer fields men's and women's alpine teams in the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association with Mount Sunapee as the listed home venue, racing slalom and giant slalom at EISA carnivals hosted by Colby, St. Lawrence, Dartmouth, Vermont and Williams and at the NCAA East Region Championships. The college is an NCAA Division III member of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference, so there are no athletic scholarships. Head coach Andy Locke, hired in August 2021 after 11 years with Pats Peak Ski Club, runs both teams.

Academics

What you can study.

Colby-Sawyer runs a two-semester calendar with no January term: the fall 2026 semester ends with final exams on December 14-17 and spring classes begin January 19, 2027, so the early carnivals fall in the first weeks of spring term and the late-February NCAA East Regional lands mid-semester, with only a one-day winter recess on February 15. The college offers 21 bachelor's programs across nursing and health sciences, business, sciences, social sciences and the arts, and states that 100% of students complete one or more internships in their field.
