ALASKA'S LARGEST CITY. THE CHUGACH OUT THE WINDOW.
University of Alaska Anchorage
The University of Alaska Anchorage is an open-access public university of roughly 12,000 students in a wooded corner of Anchorage, with the Chugach Mountains a short drive east. The Seawolves ski team races in RMISA against the Division I western schools and hosts its alpine home races at Alyeska Resort in Girdwood; nearly every other carnival means a flight south.

Why Alaska Anchorage?
A city campuswith real mountains.
UAA is a practical, open-access university; the ski team is the part of it that competes at the national level.

A Division I-level ski schedule
UAA is Division II in most sports, but skiing is a single National Collegiate championship, and the Seawolves finished eighth of 22 teams at the 2026 NCAA Championships.(goseawolves.com)

Alyeska is the home hill
The Seawolf Invite and RMISA regional races are held at Alyeska Resort in Girdwood, the alpine team's home hill.(goseawolves.com)

Athletic aid is on the table
UAA awards partial athletic scholarships from $1 up to a full scholarship covering tuition, fees, room, board and books, renewable yearly.(goseawolves.com)

Degrees that point at Alaska careers
More than 150 certificate and degree programs, with engineering, nursing, aviation and business among the largest colleges.(uaa.alaska.edu)
About the school
The honest version.
What the school is, what it is known for, and what a family should weigh before committing.
The University of Alaska Anchorage is a public, open-access university of roughly 10,500 to 12,000 students spread across a main Anchorage campus and four community campuses. The Anchorage campus sits in a wooded part of Alaska's largest city, with the Chugach mountains a short drive east. Academically it is a practical place: health sciences, engineering, business, aviation and the Alaska Native Science and Engineering Program are the strengths, and most degrees point at Alaska careers. Admission is not selective; a 2.0 high school GPA qualifies for a bachelor's track and test scores are not used. For a ski racer the draw is Alyeska Resort in Girdwood, about 30 to 40 miles south, where the Seawolves host their RMISA giant slalom and slalom races; Nordic races run at Kincaid Park in town. UAA is NCAA Division II in most sports, but skiing has one national championship, and UAA finished 7th of 23 teams at the 2025 NCAA Championships. Every other RMISA meet means a flight to the Lower 48 or Canada.
Know before you commit
- Program stability: in August 2020 UAA eliminated alpine skiing (with hockey and gymnastics) after a $34 million state funding cut; the team survived only because supporters raised $628,000, two years of operating costs, and regents reinstated it in January 2021. The ski team was also slated for elimination in 2016.(uaa.alaska.edu)
- Remoteness and travel: apart from the Seawolf Invite and RMISA regionals at Alyeska and Kincaid Park, every RMISA and NCAA event in 2024-25 was in Colorado, Utah, Montana, New Hampshire, British Columbia or Yukon, so the season is built around long flights.(goseawolves.com)
- Cost for out-of-state families right now: nonresident tuition is $875 per credit versus $251 resident (about 3.5x) until the proposed 2027-28 change is finalized in November 2026.(catalog.uaa.alaska.edu)
- Alpine is the smaller half of the program: the 2026-27 roster lists 10 alpine skiers (5 women, 5 men) against 17 Nordic skiers, and the 2026 alpine team results at the Nevada Invitational were 8th of 8.(goseawolves.com)

Questions for the coach
No published training week for this program, so these are the questions to ask.
- Travel loadEvery 2025-26 RMISA carnival outside Alaska was in Colorado, Utah, Nevada or Montana; ask how many class days the January-to-March schedule costs and how professors handle it.
- Alyeska logisticsAsk how often the alpine group trains at Alyeska versus in-town facilities, and who drives the roughly 40 minutes to Girdwood.
- Program stabilityAlpine skiing was cut in 2020 and reinstated in 2021 after supporters raised $628,000; ask how the program is funded today and for how long.
- Tuition residencyRegents voted in August 2026 to end the nonresident tuition differential from 2027-28 pending a final vote; ask what rate you would actually pay.

Academics
What you can study.
UAA runs on a semester calendar, so the January-to-March race season sits entirely inside spring semester. Admission to bachelor's programs is open access with a minimum 2.5 high school GPA, and test scores are not used in the decision for most programs. Engineering and nursing have structured course sequences worth mapping against travel weeks before you commit to a major.

Residence hall students must buy a meal plan. WUE students from Western states pay 150% of the resident rate. Partial athletic scholarships are available in skiing.
